A Sweet Escape From Life (by Sara Steinberg)

The crystal clear bottle
Shimmering in the light
seems so beautiful to my aching eyes
The sun dances upon it, as if to say,
"you can never have me"
My heart, longing for a better life, replies:

I reach for the sparkle
ever so slowly
not wanting to ruin my perfect escape
I bring the sweet poison to my lips
and something inside changes
feelings of warmth envelope my body

All pain seems to die away
my past, my present, my future
all gone in a matter of seconds
A bright white light is all aglow
My heart is at rest, and all goes dark
It's over, and for an awkward minute
I miss the burdens of life
